Day 1, 2, 3 – Tiny House Framing, Framing, Framing
We have hit the ground running. In 3 days we have finished the exterior frame of our Tiny House.
Day 1 was only 4 hours of work. With a little help from my cousin, we managed to measure & build the wall with the most windows and doors. Allowing us to build the second wall frame using the first as a template.
Day 2 was very productive. Built the second main wall. Trying to raise them up from a laying position was difficult to say the least. We ended up having to pull neighbors off the street to help lift the walls; but, 5 people and a series of ropes and pulleys later, it’s done. They were a little heavier than we thought they would be. But we got there! Even managed to build the 2 short walls all within about 6 hours.
Day 3 seemed a little slower. The roof runs were all cut to size and installed. We secured the frame correctly, leveled all the walls and ensured everything is square. Which, amazingly it is! I was not expecting that. We also installed a waterproof membrane on the roof and cut the roofing metal to size ready for install tomorrow. All in all the exterior frame has taken about 14 hours of labor over the last 3 days.
Notes on the framing:
The wood we used was 90mm x 45mm (about 2×4″ for the Americans among us). The frame was nailed together using a nail gun. I cannot stress enough how much time and energy a nail gun can save. One thing we did do, was also add large screws in all studs that extended from top to bottom, as well as the roof runs. This was to help stabilize the frame when it is being moved around as it will be transported a few times in its life. We also added some earthquake strapping to the exterior to give it a little bit more strength.
All we have left with the frame is to build the second floor. But I think the next few days will be focused on getting it watertight.
Also, to anyone who has trying to follow the live feed on Twitch (notsoTinyLiving) – we have obviously been having trouble with the feed. It seems to stream for 10 minutes and then die. No idea why. We will try fix it tomorrow….
