Who are we?

It’s difficult to describe oneself. The phrase “epitome of contradiction” comes to mind as a pretty good explanation, or polymath / jack-of-all-trades really (and master of none). I have skills/experience/training in: radio electronics, auto electrical, teaching, mechanics, panel beating, building, painting, plumbing, 240v electrical, web development, app developer, photoshop expert, computer & IT systems/repair; the list goes on.

I’m basically “everyone’s dad who knows how to do anything with their hands”.

My partner on the other hand is easy to describe: Addicted to computer games and ‘snort out your nose’ funny. A welcome relaxation and distraction from my mind that can never stop and relax.

How did this become our life ?

Well, it came as a planned decision that was a few months in the making. For the previous 4 years, we both were living and working in China. When the pandemic hit, we started to look seriously about returning to our home country and moving onto another stage in life. I have previously purchased, renovated and sold property as well as built several motorhomes in the past. So, building a Tiny House just seemed like a logical combination of skills and experience to use.

Tiny Houses have become quite popular in New Zealand. Although I’ll admit that a lot of people are taking advantage of this and building them to sell at exorbitant prices. I see them for sale between $80,000NZD and $120,000NZD. Which is an eyewatering price when you realize the cost to build even with labor. Let me tell you, if you are paying this amount for a Tiny House, you are losing the entire point of a Tiny House. They are about living smaller, cheaper; and more sustainable.

What does the future hold?

Who knows. Its nice to have long term plans but I always find short term plans are far more achievable. Live your life in 2–4-year blocks. We live quite fluidly. New Zealand, China, Thailand, Australia, Cambodia, Eastern Europe, who knows where we will end up in a few years. I figured a Tiny House is a great option to build, live in, store if we head overseas for extended periods; and always have it here to come back to. One of the biggest hurdles with moving countries or traveling for long periods is the setup costs of returning. Buying a car, furniture, homewares. It adds up and eats into your savings. Having a Tiny House stored really eliminates this.

We are thinking seriously about buying land. I’ve always had dreams of building my own house from scratch. I sit in my spare time designing and sketching them. But I’m really not sure we need it. We could really get away with building several tiny houses to make a beautiful off-grid property. Some examples I have found and absolutely love are these:

Many people contact me asking how to install things, or best ways to do something when building a Tiny House or Motorhome. It keeps me busy.

If you are in New Zealand (specifically the South Island – Christchurch) and want to come and explore the house, you are more than welcome too.

Do you need a Tiny House builder in New Zealand? I guarantee I’m the cheapest available. We can discuss it.
