Well… We made it as far as the road
As the title suggests. Moving didn’t go so well.
So it turns out that when you put two tonnes of weight on 2 axles, on a long trailer, you should probably do some math and calculations to check if the house is balancing right. They didn’t teach me that in math class and it’s certainly something I just hoped would go well rather than putting any real effort or thought into it.
So it didn’t in fact go well. We made it as far as the road. Leaving quite a substantial gouge in it as we came out of the driveway from the drawbar scraping on the ground. To put it simply, there is too much weight on the tongue of the trailer. It is leaning heavily to the front (as we extended the house 1 meter forward because there was so much length in the drawbar available). It also has the issue of being generally too heavy for 2 axles. The original trailer had the 2 axles spaced quite far apart. With this much weight on it, the tow company basically said it is trying to rip an axle off when trying to turn.
So…. the next 3 days were spent under the Tiny House. On the road in front of my cousins house. We had to cut one of the axles off the house completely, and then move it closer to the rear axle. We next had to cut some of the floor out to accommodate a third axle in front of the original 2.
Thanks to my brother for saving us this time. He came over, cut the old one off. Moved it. Welded it, and then built a whole new matching axle from box steel, hubs and stubs. It took some time finding the parts on a weekend, as well as sourcing 2 matching size wheels and tires with the correct stud pattern.
I must admit. I’m generally a thrill seeker. But bein under that tiny house, supported by a jack and some rather cheap vehicle stands, quite simply didn’t feel very safe. ‘Sketchy’ is the word I would use.
Nonetheless. It went well. 3 days later the Tiny house is back on the ground. Now sporting 3 axles, with better (but still not amazing) balance and weight distribution.
We are waiting for the Tow truck driver to come back in a day or so. I think we should move it at night, so I can take it slow. I’m just too scared to move it quickly.
I have to admit, 3 is sometimes better than 2.
