Occasionally we question ourselves, ‘why build and live in a Tiny House?’

Why indeed, Water pumps always fail, water pipes and wells get clogged, there is always more maintenance for things. We live 30 minutes outside the city, making it a 1-hour trip to buy something. There are actually so many downsides to living off grid. Such As not having the spa plugged in (I’m still working out that one, I’m undecided if I want to add more power capacity, or convert it to wood fired). There is always more to do. Always, like building vegetable gardens, finishing the fence, building a new trailer. It never ends.

But here is why. We quit. We literally quit our jobs. We decided to simply drop out of the rat race for now. We have enough savings for a while. Our ongoing bills are absolutely tiny compared to most.

For those who have been reading this blog for a while now, or perhaps read some of my old travel blogs, will know that we don’t always live full-time in one country. We often take a break and travel. We are actually qualified English teachers and will often teach and travel through various countries. Our last long stint was 6 years before returning home.

Being grounded in place has been great for stability. But destroying for my soul. I start getting itchy, and the need to travel is an itch that needs scratching sometimes.

Building this tiny house, and living in it for the past few years has paid for itself. The amount of money I would have spent renting an apartment or house at this point would have already been more than the complete build cost of the Tiny House. It is now a net-positive. In just 5 more years the savings will include the cost of the land as well.

But more importantly, Having the tiny house gives us the base to come home to. We can store everything, and because our bills are so low, can decide to pack up and leave for as long as we want. Then come home without having to start again. And that is what we are doing. we have been traveling NZ, catching up with friends at every stop as well as seeing this beautiful country.

For the next few months, we are just kind of existing, but not at home.
